About Us

CaptureCongress.org connects Democratic donors with the 15 House candidates and 6 Senate candidates who are most likely to win seats from vulnerable Republicans in November, giving the Democrats majorities in Congress. CaptureCongress.org does not benefit financially from donations - all donations are routed completely and directly to candidates through our partner, actBlue.

Why CaptureCongress.org
There is only one thing that Democrats across the country can do this election season that will be meaningful, and that is to direct their funds to the congressional races where we have a chance of taking Republican seats. Wherever these races are - from Tom DeLay's old seat in Texas to Rick Santorum's in Pennsylvania - we as Democrats must focus our efforts there, making donations to those candidates who can win the 15 House races and 6 Senate races we need to gain majorities in Congress and break the grip corrupt Republicans have on all three branches of government.

Why? The fact is, majorities matter. Right now, Democrats cannot hold hearings, they cannot set the legislative agenda. They cannot wield even a single lever of government to halt the right wing agenda. But with these mid-term Congressional elections in November, Democrats have the opportunity to capture Congress and begin, once again, to govern in the peoples' interest.

How we pick candidates
Of the 435 House races this November, the vast majority are safe seats, the victor a foregone conclusion dictated by partisan gerrymandering. But there are still a handful of House races where real debate exists, and where either candidate could win, and despite the red state-blue state trope, there are a number of competitive Senate seats as well. Knowing that we need a net gain of 15 seat in the House and 6 seats in the Senate to gain majority, we picked that exact number of races to highlight. We are thankful to the good people at The New York Times, Washington Post, Congressional Quarterly, Cook Political Report and others for the research that went into our final choices of races to feature.

Who is behind CaptureCongress.org?
CaptureCongress.org was conceived by political and corporate communications veteran Scott Shapiro and Web site producer Gerard Lynn. Shapiro has written speeches with a former vice president, consulted with MoveOn.org and other progressive groups, served as a communications consultant for a Congressional campaign, and written for a former Governor of New York who we all wish were still holding that office. Lynn has directed the development of large-scale Web sites that, it is safe to say, you have visited. Both live in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The site's logo and design was created by Arek Banasik. Gregor Clark at Catman & Mary created our video animation. Ramsay Adams and Rob Stuart of Evolve Strategies provided strategic guidance and fundraising.
